The Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902) was a watershed period for all southern Africans. It was a time of dreadful hardship for all its people. The burghers of the Boer republics bore the brunt of this hardship. It went beyond the expected loss of lives of the men on active duty to the incarceration of women and children and the willful destruction of homes and livestock.
